K. D. Kragen is a philosopher, writer, teacher, editor, husband, father and grandfather. A third generation San Franciscan, Vietnam era vet U.S. Coast Guard (1973-1977), married to Janet L. Kragen for 32 years (1977-present), K. D. is a published novelist ("The KillWare Chronicles" and "Plagueman"); he has taught logic and lectured in philosophy of art at various college and local art schools (Northwest College of Art, Trumeau College of the Arts). Presently he teaches senior citizens basic computer skills (to be able to keep in touch with children and grandchildren), does general computer maintenance, MS and Linux OS, manages a small publishing house, Scandia Patch Press, and edits and ghosts the writings of other local authors. Relief Fund Set Up for Employees of  The “122 Bar and Restaurant”

The Bainbridge Island Downtown Association has established a relief fund for the employees and families of The 122 Bar and Restaurant which was demolished in an early morning blaze on July 9th. You may make contributions to the relief fund at the downtown Winslow branch of Columbia Bank through the end of August. The fund will be overseen by the Downtown Association, with funds being distributed to the employees and their families in early September. Learn how to read a photo, understand how photos work in your story, and how each one helps (or hurts) in conveying your message. Acclaimed National Geographic photojournalist Steve Wilson is leading four 90-minute workshops in July on the power of photography to tell stories. Steve says “I try to use my craft as a way of speaking truth to power,” claiming that the authenticity and persuasion of his art is often more effective than direct challenges.

Steve Wilson is a local Kitsap treasure, but better known to New York City editors than here. Steve’s portfolio spans the Seattle World’s Fair to LIFE and National Geographic, and includes Time Life films. While best known for soaring landscapes and intimate interactions with wildlife, Steve Wilson has always kept a focus on social justice issues. He currently focuses on philosophy from the fringes of society, recording and photographing street people and learning about their sometimes highly developed self-governance practices. He became inspired to document the articulate wisdom and sensitivity he witnessed, knowing that his art could make the hard political issues a little harder to ignore.

Tuesdays, Month Of July @ OfficeXpats Workshop – “Understand The Power of Photo To Tell Your Story” With Steve Wilson
Learn how to read a photo, understand how photos work in your story, and how each one helps (or hurts) in conveying your message. Acclaimed National Geographic photojournalist Steve Wilson is leading four 90-minute workshops in July on the power of photography to tell stories. Steve says “I try to use my craft as a way of speaking truth to power,” claiming that the authenticity and persuasion of his art is often more effective than direct challenges. Steve Wilson is a local Kitsap treasure, but better known to New York City editors than here. Steve’s portfolio spans the Seattle World’s Fair to LIFE and National Geographic, and includes Time Life films. While best known for soaring landscapes and intimate interactions with wildlife, Steve Wilson has always kept a focus on social justice issues. He currently focuses on philosophy from the fringes of society, recording and photographing street people and learning about their sometimes highly developed self-governance practices. He became inspired to document the articulate wisdom and sensitivity he witnessed, knowing that his art could make the hard political issues a little harder to ignore.  —$10 for each 90-minute workshop, 12-1:30 pm on Tuesdays 7/3, 7/10, 7/17, 7/31 (no workshop on 7/24). June 19, & 26 @ OfficeXpats – “Self-publishing For Revenue And Business Building” Workshop Continues Tuesdays in June at noon!
In 2008, for the first time in history, more books were self-published than those published traditionally. With self-publishing (also called “alternative” or “independent” publishing), the author is responsible for the entire process, including design (cover/interior), formats, price, distribution, marketing and PR. Authors can do it all themselves or outsource all or part of the process. In this workshop, we explore why small businesses would want to use independent-publishing services and navigate some of the choices and issues.
Session IV (June 26, 12-1:30)– The Submission Process: We’ll review and possibly walk through services such as Kindle, Amazon’s CreateSpace, Lulu, Smash Words, Hub Pages, and Lightning Source as used by innovative independent publishers such as PublishNext.$5 per session. Tuesday, June 26 @ Schmidt’s Home Appliance & Sleep Center – “Cooking Class & Demonstration
Over the next several weeks, Schmidt’s Home Appliance will be providing “how-to” cooking classes by some of the most popular local restaurants, bakeries and chefs, preparing some of their favorite recipes, using the appliances at our retail store. On June 26th, 2012 Chef Roberta S. Lang will be making Roasted Figs with Gorgonzola; prepared with figs, gorgonzola or other Bleu Cheese, and walnuts.  Absolutely delicious!   Chef Roberta will also be preparing Sweet-Potato Quesadillas made with onions, cloves, salsa, and lot’s more.  What a treat!  (Both recipes will be available following her demonstration.) So, come and check out Chef Roberta’s recipes, bring a friend, introduce yourself to our staff and enjoy!  We look forward to seeing you!
