BBC Friday 19 July 2013 – “Cloud Security, Part 2”

Join us this BBC Friday for part two of Cloud Security – Wa’s’up Wi’that?

What’s safe to upload to Microsoft SkyDrive, or Google Drive, or Dropbox? Is one service provider more secure than another? How safe are your or your clients’ files in The Cloud? The cloud is not only great for off-site backup — as a supplement to all your other backup routines! it conveniently syncs across platforms, computers, and other devices such as tablets, smart phones, and “non-invasive” brain implants (see killware.net for more details about how you too can get a brain implant).

This Friday, under the microcosmic guidance of our own tech-sensei BBC Regular Jason Omens, we’ll get at the fine print of Cloud Security, terms of service and privacy policies. For example, Google notes: “Some of you don’t like to read legal documents, but this stuff matters. Our Terms of Service cut through the jargon and provide you with clear details about our policies. Our Privacy Policy lays out our policies regarding your information in a simple and straightforward way” (google.com/intl/en/policies/).

One unofficial response on answers.microsoft.com forum to SkyDrive cloud security: “Using Groove or Dropbox or Live Mesh can work, but it’s not a great solution because it will create multiple copies of your host notebooks (in OneNote). That doesn’t guarantee problems, but it significantly increases the likelihood of problems. Using a single-source solution (like SkyDrive or SharePoint or Windows File Shares) is more reliable and elegant. SkyDrive SSL encrypts files in transit but does not impose any additional encryption on the files at rest.  …to encrypt a OneNote file at rest you have to password protect that section….  Microsoft encourages business users to use SharePoint.  SkyDrive is a consumer-grade solution. SkyDrive is not, and has never claimed to be, HIPAA-compliant….  [Instead  use] SharePoint or a secured Windows File Share over an encrypted VPN” (post d3ed5c9d-ea48-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5). Check out MS’s terms of service information page (microsoft.com/en-us/legal/intellectualproperty/copyright/default.aspx) and you’ll get a feel for the potential complexity of the subject.

A useful place to get oriented is hongkiat’s “Gloud Storage Face-off: Dropbox Vs Google Drive Vs SkyDrive” (hongkiat.com/blog/dropbox-gdrive-skydrive/). Still confused? Let’s see if we can de-encrypt the jargon a little this BBC Friday.

Be there, be free, be businesswise. For, in a sense, as serial entrepreneurs, we’re all businesswise!

So, invite your friends and associates to join us for this exciting event … and another delicious cup of BBC!

ANYONE who enjoys talking, chatting, visiting, talking, and sharing their BBCness and/or OfficeXpatsness — and touting their own exciting entrepreneurial endeavors — here is an opportunity to sit at a B.I. 4th Of July Booth and do all of those things!

MOSTLY, it would be putting in an hour or two (or however long you are having fun) personing the booth to answer any questions passersby might have about BBC or OfficeXpats. There be fliers to hand out also, arg, avast ye, where’s the grog. That’s about it.

If you’re available to help, just reply to Dave Kragen at [email protected] — and if you have an idea of when you’d like to be at the booth, just include that in your email.

Also, we will be setting up the booth around 8:30 on the morning of the 4th, so if that sounds like barrels of fun, let Dave know that too.

Also, we’ll be taking the booth down sometime at the end of the day’s festivities, around 5:00 I think, so help there will likewise be appreciated.

Sincerely,

BBC Friday 14 June 2013 – “Telling Your Story”

Join us this BBC Friday for Another Story Telling Time

thumb_0051Greetings lovely BBC People! Hasn’t summer been just … well, just … you know … like ….

So, here we are, in the thick of June and the lazy days of summer! Therefore this BBC Friday we will honor once more the forth founding principle of BBC: The BBC offers its members the opportunity to build connections of trust between each others’ companies and services, sharing skills and specialties, and critiquing professional copy. Part of the way we started out building trust in one another’s businesses was to share our stories, who we are as business owners and entrepreneurs. Story telling.

Four or five minutes each: for whoever feels the narrative muse to tell a story, here’s the opportunity to talk about your journey into your present business out of some previous business incarnation, or your story of journeying from the old country to the Puget Sound, or your story about moving from large corporation, government agency, or novelist-in-a-cave, to network administrator or office ergonomics resource or personal trainer and business consultant. Or you can make up a story about what you’d like to be — businesswise. For, in a sense, as serial entrepreneurs, we’re all businesswise!

So, invite your friends and associates to join us for this exciting event … and another delicious cup of BBC!

June – OfficeXpats Tuesday@Noon Workshop – “The Self Publishing workshop returns! (noon-1:00)
Now more than ever, it’s within anyone’s reach to write, produce, and publish a book, and it turns out to be a great way to build your business and your credibility as an independent professional. You may already have the content for an inexpensive or free 100-page book, and it just needs some strategic morphing. With self-publishing (also called “alternative” or “independent” publishing), the author is responsible for the entire process, including design (cover/interior), formats, price, distribution, marketing and PR. Authors can do it all themselves or outsource all or part of the process. In this workshop series, Randy Kuckuck, founder of PublishNext, along with some of the company’s editorial and design experts return to help us explore how small businesses can navigate some of the choices and issues. Xpat regulars Dave Kragen, Izzy Sanchez, and Annette Walker will also contribute. Session I, June 4, 12-1 pm: How self-publishing builds your business. Session II, June 11, 12-1 pm: The economics of publishing your book. Session III, June 18, 12-1 pm: Designing a book to be your best advertising piece. Session IV, June 25, 12-1 pm: The submission process, and marketing your book. (officexpats.com/self-publishing-for-revenue-and-business-building/)

BBC Friday 24 May 2013 – “Think Club!”

This BBC Friday Bill Ruddick will lead our first “Think Club” Strategy Roundtable.

This BBC Friday Bill will lead us in another “Think Club” Strategy Roundtable — with a few new twists! So bring your head, brains, and creative intuitions with you. Thinking caps will be supplied.

We will look at some “defeaters” to critical thinking and thoughtful perceiving … such as how not to be “critical” while thinking critically. Afterwards there will be a chance to debrief — critically or otherwise — on how the process worked for everyone.

Think Club Resources useful to get back into the thinking mode: Thinking Hats (google docs pdf). Think Club Bibliography (google docs pdf). And for those who missed it, here’s Bill Ruddick’s original “Think Club” presentation from BBC Friday 15 February 2013 Think Club Presentation (google docs pdf). Logic & thinking from KaveDragen Ink (google docs pdf): informal fallacies & formal deductive reasoning.

Think About It.

So invite your friends and associates to join us for this thoughtful, if not just slightly critical, and yet very exciting BBC event — and another delicious cup of BBC!

– What could happen today that would make it the perfect day?
– What am I most excited about doing today?
– What accomplishment today would completely energize me?
– What inspired me to start my business?
– What is my business’ greatest strength?
– If I could wave a magic wand (and time and money weren’t a problem), what would be my greatest wish for my business? What step could I take within the next week to support that wish?

BBC Friday 17 May 2013 – “Cloud Security” w/ Jason Omens

Join us this BBC Friday for a very special event: BBC Regular & OXp Technology Sensei Jason Omens will lead the long-awaited discussion on “Cloud Security.”

Cloud Security: Is there such a thing? What is it? How much does it weigh? How much does it cost? Was it really ancient technology discovered in prehistoric caverns deep beneath the Mid-Atlantic islands of the Azores, from where, as some cosmogonists believe, the fabled Lost Atlantis ruled Pangaea for a million years before the Acadians and Ugarits first starting planting the Hanging Garden Of Babylon?

Jason Omens will unravel these eldritch mysteries for those who dare this Friday’s BBC secret session. (It’s not really secret…like, anyone may attend, really.)

Even as we all utilize various computer security measures and protections — login passwords, file encryption, anti-virus and anti-malware programs such as Windows Defender (once called MS Security Essentials), AVAST!, AVG, Malwarebytes — even so should we not be aware of what happens and what vulnerabilities may accrue to our data once it leaves the safety of our own hard drives and takes wings into the cloud?

TheCloud, offsite Shangri-La, the final frontier, Data-Heaven. But is your data really in heaven when floating about in TheCloud? Are the gravity angels protecting your data as advertised? Or are the eAngels really cyberpunk hacker-werewolves, eSpace Vampires waiting to lunch upon your intellectual property…or worse the property of your clients which you have intrusted to TheCloud.

Jason will discuss Microsoft Office365 and SkyDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox, as the primary examples of Cloud Computing.

So, invite your friends and associates to join us for this daring journey into the unknown astral realm of TheCloud … and another delicious cup of BBC!
