BBC Friday @ Chamber IslandWood Breakfast!

This Friday September 13th BBC Is joining the monthly Chamber Breakfast @ Islandwood. Therefore BBC will NOT meet at our usual, delightful OfficeXpats venue. Rather we will join the B.I. A rare opportunity for Bainbridge Island to have its own community radio station: BBC Regular ANNETTE WALKER will lead a roundtable discussion on this exciting proposition!

Sustainable Bainbridge is working with the community to develop a proposal for a low-power FM radio license from the FCC. Being low-power, coverage will be to Bainbridge Island only. The station would be for community radio, also broadcasting in emergency situations such as a power outages, weather emergencies, volcano explosions, tsunamis, zombie outbreaks or other disasters.

A wide range of programming of general and specific community interest is being sought. The radio signal could be accompanied by streaming on-demand listening.

Barry Peters is pulling the project together, and BBC Regular Annette Walker (astonishinc.com) has been working with Barry and other volunteers to spread the word and contribute to making a great application to the FCC. Application is due October 15th. A public meeting will be September 17, 7:00-8:30 PM, at Waterfront Park Community Center.

This BBC Friday longtime BBC Regular and sometime lecturer on world travel Neal Kellner (cmtravel4fun.com) will talk about his latest experiences with travel, marketing, and Pinterest (the latest monster of social/business networking).

He’ll talk about how social media works with other “ad media,” and how social media is one way for businesses to collaborate. “I have been a close follower of these topics for years. Experimenting over two years with social media within my business, I’ve learned enough to be dangerous. I want to learn as well as share — since no one (not even the pros) seem to understand where all this is heading. I am certain social media needs to be considered by all small businesses. I want to encourage fellow business people to talk about this and becoming engaged today…not after the boat leaves the dock.”

Monday 5 August 2013- Joint OfficeXpats, BBC, Accelerate Kitsap “Linux Install-fest” (Noon-4:00) – As part of the OfficeXpats Coworking Week celebration (see next event entry below), on August 5th, Noon-4:00, you can give your poorly-functioning, slow-running laptop or “legacy computer” a second life with a Linux operating system & Open Source software. In the spirit of collaboration and Coworking Week, tech-savvy volunteers from Accelerate Kitsap, BBC, Astonish Inc, and Kombi Corp are coming together at OfficeXpats to offer the opportunity of adding longer life to old computers.Volunteers will help you step-by-step through the process of installing Linux for basic computing, Internet browsing, and of course for playing solitaire, and Open Office or LibreOffice for word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentations. 5-9 August 2013- COWORKING WEEK @ OfficeXpats – Coworking as a “thing” turns 8 years old on August 9, and all next week is Coworking Week. The big celebration will be on Friday at OfficeXpats, an all-day free Open House, with a BBQ lunch. Please stop by to “cowork,” (set up your laptop, get productive), or join us for our traditional BBQ lunch of burgers and dogs. Everyone is welcome, at no charge, and members do not use up one of their days to come. Just help us celebrate this community trend that supports independent workers!
