It’s the thick of Autumn here at BBC, and we have a great topic this week about changes in the Federal Dept Of Labor (DOL) which could affect many of us. 

If you are an independent contractor/consultant, or hire independent contractors, or if you have employees or will ever have employees, then you should be aware of changes the Federal Department of Labor has been working on this past year.

Two changes in particular could impact millions of workers and most businesses. Both changes are designed to help provide a fair workplace for employees, but could have significant impact on small businesses. We will discuss the DOL’s definition of what qualifies one to be an independent contractor or consultant as well as proposed changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act regarding Wage & Hour laws which will dramatically impact the number of employees who are exempt from overtime pay, breaks, and meal periods.

Thank you one and all, after Bev’s passing, for the special gift you sent me with your expressions of love and care. As my wife and companion of 51 years, Bev was a very special person who brought laughter and sometimes tears to those who knew her, both as my gatekeeper for over 35 years with my tax business in Silicon Valley and in the last few joyful years on Bainbridge Island. I wish you all could have known her well, but I’m grateful that many of you thought so highly of her. We’ll discuss some current issues for local businesses such as connectivity, transportation, real estate, and the local and regional business climate.

“While my legal practice, specializing in maritime transactions,  may not really have a good deal of curb appeal – unless I am speaking to shipyards, vessel owners, or old salts and seadogs – I will share a bit about that work. I will also give a little insight into my other work experiences as a windjammer cruise business owner, a ship captain, commercial fisherman, law librarian, law professor.
