Experts say niche publishing can be more successful in the long run.” 

The Idea. With the proposed subtitle “Celebrating Business and Entrepreneurship on Bainbridge Island and throughout the Kitsap Peninsula,” the site will be an aggregater and pollinator (originator) of stories focusing primarily on such categories as: Non-Profits, Real Estate, Trends (business, demographics, economics, technology), Tourism & Travel, plus Point Of View (columns from contributors on subjects such as Leadership, Investing, Human Resources, Business & Politics). Some sub-categories: Second Acts (seniors with a passion, doing neat business or community stuff in retirement); Business Books (good reads for biz folks); After Hours (interesting and fun stuff business people are doing in their free time, such as art, acting, coaching, playing music, running a non-profit or running with biker gangs like the Geezers Of Furry).

Leslie on City Council: “I have been an active advocate for sustainability and local economy since 1992 when I started volunteering for Sustainable Seattle and later for the Business Alliance for Local Living Economy. I love how the design of physical space can encourage the growth of relationships in a community. To live in deeper community with neighbors, I was a founding member of Jackson Place Cohousing (JPC). I had many leadership roles in the development and construction of JPC’s 27 condominium units and common spaces, located just southeast of downtown Seattle. I lived there for eight years until moving to Bainbridge Island. I also volunteered for the Pomegranate Center (“Strengthening Communities Through Creative Collaboration”). I even went all the way to New York City to take a workshop on “How to turn a place around,” from one of my favorite organizations, the Project For Public Spaces. I visited City Repair projects in Portland, Oregon, and have participated recently in that organization’s annual Village Building Convergence.” 

Leslie moved to Bainbridge Island in 2009, where her son graduated from BHS in 2015. She started a coworking business in 2011 called OfficeXpats with partner Jason Omens. OfficeXpats is a shared office space and collaborative hub for independent professionals, and it won the Chamber Of Commerce small business of the year award for 2014 for its support of local business and the community. Leslie has also served on the boards of Sustainable Bainbridge and the Kitsap Regional Library Foundation.

This Friday BBC, we’ll go classic with an Elevator Speech [ES] workshop. What makes not just a good [ES], but an amazing [ES]? We’ll roundtable what constitutes a good [ES], what are the key elements to include in your [ES] — and conversely what should not be in your [ES]?

At BBC, we’ve often distinguished between a typical [ES], at 30 seconds tops, and an Extended Elevator Speech [eES], between one and two minutes (but no longer than that — heaven forbid!). The [eES] tends to flesh out that hook/tag line and vision statement that makes your [ES] shine, and it can also allow for a broader and more detailed development of your business’s products/services, typical clientele, and a little of your business philosophy. 

Workshop Goals: 1) Go around the table, hear each one’s [ES], then drawing from what you hear from each other, discuss the key elements of what goes into a really great [ES]. 2) As time permits, distinguish out what could go into a longer [eES], and how to avoid conflating the two — er, how to avoid spinning your [ES] into an [eES].

Special thanks to hosts Steve Kersten, bbc acting chair, and Bill Ruddick, bbc thinkologist, who will be graciously moderating and skillfully navigating this exciting classic BBC session. Beauty, eh [BE].
